A photographer's view: Portraits from the Florida State Fair

One of the hardest parts of this job, for me, is using downtime productively. Some days you'll be running from one assignment to the next with barely any time for lunch. Other days you'll shoot one assignment and have the rest of the day free. The challenge is making sure you spend that time wisely. Last week I set aside a few hours at the end of my shift to visit the state fair and make portraits.

I've always found shooting portraits challenging. I would much rather blend into the walls and be ignored. To overcome those fears I just figured I needed to do more of it. I took a lightweight kit: a 28mm, a 50mm, and an 85mm. I used a flash and a small velcro-on softbox.
