Today we begin an occasional series of posts shining a spotlight on local amateur photographers whose work appears in the Tampa Bay Times.

Times readers have probably noticed the "Reader photo gallery" feature at the top of the BayLink section of the daily newspaper. You can almost always find a good photo featuring the wildlife and natural beauty of Florida. You may even have noticed that certain photographers tend to show up there on a semiregular basis. One of those is Colin Ward, a talented amateur photographer from St. Petersburg. Having chosen Colin as the first Tampa Bay Times reader photographer to feature, we invited him to submit a sampling of his photos, along with a short write-up, both of which you will find below.

"I started taking photos as a 10-year-old and at one point developed and printed film in my parents' darkroom/bathroom. I took a photography class as an elective in college and have been taking photos ever since. For many years I shot slides, but switched to digital as soon as it became available. I presently use cameras from the Fujifilm X Series and work in Lightroom and Photoshop as needed. I willingly shoot anything and everything but shy away from the pressure of weddings and other once in a lifetime happenings. Although technical issues are important in photography, most people respond to the content of the shot, so I am always looking for new angles and things that others may not notice. A photographer needs to have a mix of left brain and right brain!"
