Military veterans go from homeless to harmony in New Directions

A group of military veterans who were once homeless have found a new direction.

In fact, that's the name of the singing group that brought them to Tampa on Sunday for a performance at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts.

Comprised of men and women who have served in various branches of the U.S. military, the New Directions Veterans Choir is an award-winning a cappella group that sings doo-wop, soul, traditional gospel and popular music.

In addition to their military service, the members of the New Directions Veterans Choir also have another thing in common: When they returned home after their service, they each became homeless.

The New Directions Veterans Choir recently performed for NBC's America's Got Talent and has been featured on the NBC Nightly News and the E! network.

On Monday, they reached out to the children at St. Peter Claver Catholic School in Tampa, talking to the children, telling them their story and singing for them. The group is currently touring the country singing.

If you were making a collage of Florida things, you’d certainly include an alligator, some mouse ears and an orange. You could throw in a car bumper splattered with love bugs, some spaghetti models (because you, Floridian, know what those are) ...
