Reader's Exchange: One good bike ride may lead to more

If you're looking for new friends, and for a bit of exercise that may eventually have gas-saving consequences, bicyclist Kimberly Cooper has a deal for you. She invites you and your bike to meet her friends and their bikes each Saturday morning (just ask for the Gib's Ride Group) at St. Petersburg's North Shore Pool (Eighth Avenue and North Shore Drive NE) for a ride that starts at 8:30 sharp and lasts until around 10 a.m.

In addition to your bicycle, bring a water bottle and a spare tire tube (in case of a flat). Helmets are required. Come ready to observe the rules of the road. Minors must bring written permission from a parent or guardian and have an adult to supervise them. Kimberly adds that after you get comfortable bicycling on the roads, you may be less tentative about biking to the store, to work and on varied errands, feeling free to leave your gas-gulping car at home.

All items are in good condition, and if you're interested in adopting any of them, please call (727) 863-5936.

Lois of Pinellas Park points out, quite correctly, that crafters soon will be thinking about creating wreaths and other decorations from pinecones, dried flowers, seed pods and such. To get you started, she's giving away several large pinecones and a box of Dutchman's pipe seed pods that are dried and open and look like little upside-down umbrellas. Please call (727) 544-8947.

Sheri Stein hopes to locate a power chair (not a scooter). It needn't be a power wheelchair; it could be similar to a Hoveround. Sheri's husband is recovering from a spinal cord injury, and when he comes home from rehab, the couple will need to move him up a ramp. Please e-mail dmdmom01@verizon.net.
