The state has invited kids to hunt wild hogs like these on Southwest Florida Water Management District property.

This week, the St. Petersburg Times reported that the state of Florida has invited children to hunt feral hogs on a state reserve in Manatee County. The idea is to reduce the number of wild hogs and expose kids to hunting.

The first hunt was to be held Saturday, and the second on Oct. 24.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission asked kids ages 8-16 to write essays saying why they should be chosen, with the top 24 getting spots in the hunt. Only 20 kids applied, so nobody was left out.

Here are some of the essays.

I'm nine years old and I love to hunt. When I was six I got my first pelitt gun. When I was seven I got a red rider beebee gun. I would take old boxes and practice. I would draw a many animals on it and shoot them. My naybor has a place up in Giorgia and he has a deer stand. Evry year he goes and he invites my dad evry time he goes. Also when he goes he takes me or one of my two brothers. I like it alot when we go. Sometimes after we go hunting and we shot a deer we will have a deer meat sandwitch. When I have a deer meat sandwitch it reminds me of shuting a deer. After a grate day of hunting it is time to go to bed. When I go to bed I dream of what we did that day. When I wake up I think about what we are going to do today and I always hope it is hunting.

Hi, im Kyle Perkins. I would enjoy going on your hog hunt. My grandpa and I would thoroughly enjoy going. We hain't been able to hunt in the past couple years because my grandma having (MS) he takes care of her full time and I help when I can.

I think I should be chosen to go on the hog hunt because I have always dreamed of going hunting, especially hog hunting. I love when my dad brings back a big hog or deer! I just wish I could kill one and mount it on my wall.

Thank you,

My name is David Stripp and I am 14. I have been practicing to shoot a bow for 3 years. I have yet to shoot a hog, although I keep trying. I shoot to eat and support conservation of the land and wildlife. This would be a dream come true.

I would like to enter this hunt because I have wanted to hunt for a long time now and have never been because we don't really know a spot to hunt. Also I am about to get a gun from my grandpa. Last I want to shoot a hog.

My name is Katlyn Bone. I am 12 years old. I enjoy the outdoors and hunting a lot. I have been hunting for 4 years now. Not only do I like hunting hogs, I also like hunting deer too. It is a really fun hobby that I really do enjoy. When I get the adrenaline rush from shooting wild game I can't even stand still. I enjoy still hunting and I also hunt with dogs a lot too. I'd rather go hunting than go shopping for clothes or for shoes. It's time that I get to spend outdoors with my family. I hope you select me for the hunt because it is something I truly enjoy.
