Maria Bedolla, 27, and Casey Platt, 32, of Riverview. Married Jan. 28, 2012.
They should have met 10 years ago when they both worked at Brandon Mall and had many of the same friends. Maria thinks she might have seen Casey in the mall before. After all, she was one of those squeaky teens who obsessed over N' Sync, and he worked in a music store. Casey might have helped her, but she didn't notice or remember. Perhaps Lance Bass' sweet smolder on the CD cover was too distracting.
Their mutual friend, John, was making a film about a young couple in love. Casey was the male lead, but they needed a girl. John asked Maria to do it, but she declined because she had a boyfriend and the role would involve kissing.
Years later, in September 2010, some of Maria's and Casey's mutual friends planned to go dancing at the Castle in Ybor City for '80s night. When Casey saw Maria, he was mesmerized. He was so nervous he reached out to shake her hand and grabbed her arm instead. Maria thought it was cute. They stuck to each other's sides all night. When Maria got home, she excitedly emailed a friend: "I'm gonna marry this guy!"
A week later, they were already official and fell in love fast. She moved in with Casey two months later. On Memorial Day weekend in 2011, Casey proposed in Vero Beach.
They thought they wanted to have a big wedding, but a week or so into frenzied planning, Maria changed her mind.
"I realized (getting married) isn't about the party, the centerpieces, the DJ. It's about us," she said. They didn't want to wait a year. They just wanted to be Mr. and Mrs. Casey Platt — as soon as possible.
The couple planned their nuptials with Weddings on a Whim in a month's time. They got married on Sand Key Beach with just family in attendance.
