Rangers tighten up post-Lightning drubbing

NEW YORK — If being embarrassed by the Lightning was the wakeup call the Rangers needed, they got the message loud and clear.

Since a 5-1 home loss to the Lightning on Monday, the Rangers haven't allowed a goal in back-to-back wins, including Sunday's 5-0 rout of the league-leading Canadiens.

"You get a chance to play a team that has been going very good, you want to see how you stack up," said Marty St. Louis, who had a goal and an assist. "You know it is a fast team and we have to be sharp. I thought we were."

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 21 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, following backup Cam Talbot's blanking of the Flyers on Wednesday.

The Rangers get another shot at the Lightning on Wednesday.

Ironman streak ends: Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester's streak of 737 consecutive games played — the longest active streak in North America's four major pro sports, Elias said — ended when he had to miss a 4-2 win over the host Jets because of a lower-body injury suffered against the Senators on Saturday.

Bouwmeester had played in every game possible since March 6, 2004, when he was with the Panthers. Bouwmeester played in only 47 games in the 48-game lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, but that was because he was traded in-season and the Blues did not have enough games to play the full 48.

The longest active streak is now the Ducks' Andrew Cogliano's 540 games.

game highlights: Kyle Palmieri scored for the visiting Ducks after Coyotes goalie Mike Smith went behind his net to play the puck, fell and one of his defensemen fell on top of him, and Anaheim got a 2-1 win.
