Man's body found in St. Petersburg retention pond

ST. PETERSBURG — Authorities are investigating the death of a man found floating Sunday morning in a retention pond in front of Lifestyle Family Fitness in the 6600 block of Crosswinds Drive N.

Authorities said the body, removed from the water around 10:30 a.m., was discovered by a gym patron.

"Right now, we don't know who it is," said St. Petersburg police Lt. G.S. Totz, "but there are homeless people who congregate in this area."

With no identification immediately possible, Totz said the body, which appeared to be Caucasian or Hispanic, would be handed over to the Medical Examiner's Office, which would determine a cause of death and check for foul play.

"More than likely," Totz said, "we won't know anything for quite a while."
