Worst new show of the fall
The Neighbors (ABC): Disastrous comedy with Jami Gertz about aliens living in suburbia, a concept 3rd Rock From the Sun nailed about 16 years ago.
Worst trend
Five (!) new shows are about dysfunctional doctors, including the CW's painfully predictable Emily Owens, M.D., starring Mamie Gummer.
DVR these!
1. Last Resort (ABC): Andre Braugher commands the screen as captain of a nuclear submarine gone rogue after refusing to nuke Pakistan.
2. Vegas (CBS): The only thing cooler than Dennis Quaid as a sheriff in 1960s Las Vegas is Michael Chiklis as the mobster he's chasing.
3. Nashville (ABC): Connie Britton and Hayden Panetierre face off in a country music drama that plays like Reba McEntire versus Taylor Swift.
Biggest surprise (pleasant)
CBS's Sherlock Holmes update Elementary, which I'd heard was a derivative, disappointing mess, is saved by stars Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu.
Biggest surprise (unpleasant)
J.J. Abrams' outlandish Revolution (NBC) proves he still can't clone Lost's compelling, serialized story lines.
Breakout star everyone sees coming
Office alum Mindy Kaling as a new-school, Americanized Bridget Jones on Fox's The Mindy Project.
Worst waste of talent from Tampa Bay
Tie. Tampa native JoAnna Garcia's bouncy energy can't save NBC's Animal Practice; NBC's Chicago Fire needs fewer predictable story lines and more of St. Petersburg native Monica Raymund.
Worst waste of talent in general
How did Law & Order's Anthony Anderson, The Cosby Show's Tempestt Bledsoe, The Sopranos' Jamie-Lynn Sigler and executive producer Jimmy Fallon all land in NBC's lame sitcom Guys With Kids?
