Sam Rosenwasser, president and general manager of Tampa Bay area CBS affiliate WTSP-Ch. 10, has announced plans to retire at the end of 2008, after a tumultuous year in which the station's longtime weatherman died, the outlet adopted a new brand name and several on-air staffers were let go.

Rosenwasser, a 55-year-old industry veteran with 35 years of experience, came to WTSP in 2001. He couldn't say what his future might hold, but expects to help during the transition. WTSP owner Gannett Broadcasting is likely to name his successor soon.

"The time was right for me," said Rosenwasser, adding that retirement was his decision, though he knows some may speculate otherwise. "You never feel as if you've gotten everything done, but we've done a lot."

WTSP has faced significant changes this year, beginning with the start of high-definition news broadcasts in January and the death of longtime forecaster Dick Fletcher in February after a massive stroke.

In the following months, Chicago forecaster Tammie Souza was hired as Fletcher's successor, forecasters Randy Rauch and Anna Allen were let go, longtime weekend anchor Jennifer Howe was discharged and the station's brand was changed to 10 Connects — with retooled newscast names and a host of initiatives aimed at building new links to viewers.
