St. Petersburg Times staff writer John Barry is congratulated on being one of four finalists for feature writing for “Winter’s Tale,” the account of a dolphin with a prosthetic tail and the disabled girl who befriended him.

John Barry is a general assignment feature writer for the St. Petersburg Times. He was born in St. Louis, Mo., on April 2, 1949. He came to St. Petersburg in 2002 from the Miami Herald, where he spent most of 20 years writing and editing narrative features stories.

In 1996, he co-authored (with Tom Shroder) a biography of Everglades landscape photographer Clyde Butcher, called Seeing the Light. He won the Best Story Award from the National Association of Sunday Feature Editors in 1996.
