Fall TV Preview: Let us be your guides to best and not-so-great shows

You're never going to be able to watch everything. That's a fact. We're spinning through a never, never-ending cycle of new TV, and network execs still bank on the fall season to unleash most of their new stuff.

RELATED: When do my shows come back? A list of premieres

But don't fret. We're here to make sure you don't miss anything.

We're obsessive TV watchers who escaped the nonstop real-life drama that is The News to catch up with lots of freshman series premiering over the next few months. And we noticed a few trends.

Gone are the days when networks filled their series with brooding antiheroes. There are still some out there (The Defenders, Ozark, Better Call Saul), but this TV season is packed with military and superhero shows. The CW gets a sexy military drama with Valor, CBS brings David Boreanaz back to TV with SEAL Team and NBC gets a patriotic procedural with The Brave.

The diversity scorecards don't change much this year: ABC and NBC still do fairly well with creating a diverse lineup of series led by people who aren't just straight, white males. CBS lags behind with all but one of its new series led by men. Not surprisingly, that show is Star Trek: Discovery. The sci-fi franchise has long been lauded as one of the most progressive shows on TV, and it's wonderful to see a black woman as the lead.

With dozens of male-led new shows out this fall, and only four of them starring black men (S.W.A.T. on CBS, ABC's The Mayor, White Famous on Showtime and TBS's The Last O.G.), it's clear we've still got a ways to go when it comes to diversifying our small screens.

Of course, nostalgia is still super hot, with reboots of animated classics DuckTales and The Magic School Bus as well as '80s soap Dynasty as a glamorous CW series. And the most-talked-about new shows this season are revivals Will and Grace on NBC and the new Star Trek prequel spinoff, along with three Marvel comics-inspired series.

There are still a whole lot of boob-tube losers, but we picked our favorite 10 amongst the endless list of new TV. We separated everything else into categories, letting you know the premise and some of our thoughts.

A side note: Don't forget about the Emmys, where we honor the shows we forgot we already love, at 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS.

We know, there's just too much TV. We're here to help.
