A St. Petersburg teenager wowed the judges and the audience on the opening night of Sunday's Rising Star, earning the highest score of the night in the ABC singing competition. Macy Mashburn, who goes by the stage name Macy Kate, was a "surprise" last-minute contestant plucked from the audience, which raised some serious doubts in the Twitterverse, upon which the show greatly relies. In a complicated premise, the audience can participate during the live performance, raising the singer's approval rating to get them over the 70 percent needed to move on. Macy Kate had auditioned via Instagram with a very slickly produce video and then was picked during the live premiere when she introduced herself as a 16-year-old from St. Petersburg. A former elite swimmer with St. Petersburg Aquatics, Mashburn stepped up on stage and gave a seasoned, confident performance of Me and My Broken Heart that drew yes votes from all three judges (Ludacris, Brad Paisley and Kesha) and the audience — 93 percent positive votes. Kesha said afterward, "I was blown away. I think America was blown away." The set looks futuristic with viewers' Facebook or Twitter pictures appearing on the high-tech wall as they swipe left or right for the singer. And with instant results, there's no need for a pesky results show. — Sharon Kennedy Wynne, Times staff writer
