We've all heard of drive-in movie theaters. • But a float-in theater? • That's exactly what you'll find at Largo's Southwest Recreation Complex on Vonn Road. • The event is called Flick 'N' Float. • For five Fridays this summer, families can enjoy a movie as they float in the pool.
The films will be shown on a 20- by 30-foot screen while lifeguards maintain safety in the pool area. Those who prefer to stay dry are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
"We offer a quality program using the same inflatable screen we have in the park for our spring movies, and we have qualified technical people from the cultural center operating the system," said Mark Abdo, aquatics program manager. "This gives better sound and picture than you sometimes get outside."
Upcoming movies include Hoot (from a children's book by popular Florida author Carl Hiaasen with music by Jimmy Buffett), My Dog Skip, Happy Feet, Secondhand Lions and Mouse Hunt.
"This is our third year with the program," Abdo said. "It gives people a chance to come out and have fun at a very reasonable price."
The admission price is $5 per family of five for Largo residents and $6.25 for nonresidents. It includes all the hot dogs you can eat. Drinks, chips and candy will be sold by the teen volunteer program. The movie Mouse Hunt will close the season July 25 and will feature free chicken sandwiches along with the hot dogs, courtesy of Chick-fil-A.
For families with very young children, it can be challenging to wait for dark. For this reason the Flick 'N' Float program now begins at 7:30 p.m.
"People can come in early, have dinner and play in the pool before the movie begins at 9," Abdo said. "Then if they need to leave early, they have still had a good time."
