I'm always a bit suspicious about movies — especially comedies — filmed in exotic tropical locales. More often than not, they wind up disappointing everyone except actors getting paid to play on a sandy beach somewhere.
For every Forgetting Sarah Marshall making air fare and swanky resort accommodations pay off, there's a handful of duds like The Heartbreak Kid (the remake), Exit to Eden, Krippendorf's Tribe, Club Paradise and George of the Jungle.
So, forgive me for raising an eyebrow at Couples Retreat (PG-13), which carries the added onus of originally being rated R until producers trimmed enough sexy stuff to expand the ticket base. This one is mostly filmed in Bora Bora, which must have been a deal closer for party animals like Swingers co-stars Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau.
Along with Jason Bateman and Faizon Love, they play husbands lured to paradise for a marriage counseling vacation, complete with wacky instructors and curious lessons in matrimonial harmony. Preview trailers emphasize a yoga instructor pressing his buttocks into Vaughn's face, if that tells you anything about the humor level.
