Tyler Perry deserves his success as a brand name, but must he stick that name into the title of every movie he makes? Even James Cameron's titanic ego won't let him do that, and his movies make billions, winning Oscars to boot. That will never happen for Perry, so eventually a little humility is in order, right?
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married, Too? (PG-13) is a sequel to the filmmaker's 2007 hit, in which couples and best friends shared their deepest emotional secrets during a mountainside vacation. The movie appeared to end happily. Funny how things changed when Perry smelled another payday.
This time, the couples — including Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Jill Scott and, of course, Perry — are spending time in the Bahamas, fretting about their marriages. Someone from the first flick will die, someone else will be intruded upon by an ex-spouse, and there are rumors of a celebrity cameo at the finale, setting up a third chapter.
The next movie probably won't match the clever use of "too" in this sequel's title. But you can bet that the first two words will be "Tyler Perry's . . ."
Like all of his films, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married, Too? wasn't screened in advance for anyone except those predisposed to enjoy it.
