The gist: Gen Xers who were thoroughly ruined by their parents now try to have a little spud of their own they can brainwash however they deem fit. Like Juno, if the girl was old enough to have a mortgage and lower back pain. R
Starring: John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph, Jeff Daniels, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Allison Janney, Chris Messina, Catherine O'Hara and Paul Schneider.
The buzz: "In tone and plotting, Away We Go feels like a fairy tale built on an aggravating collection of attitudes," the Boston Globe says. "It's condescending, judgmental, righteous, yet sincerely searching." Wow, then it really is a Gen X movie.
My Sister's Keeper
The gist: A couple's daughter is diagnosed with leukemia, so the solution is to have another kid to get the parts needed to save the original kid. Why does this sound like a two-hour ad for stem-cell research? PG-13
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin, Jason Patric, Sofia Vassilieva and Joan Cusack.
The buzz: A tear-jerker during blow-'em-up season. "Unsubtle, uneven and undeniably effective, this take-no-prisoners cancer weepie poses a fascinating moral quandary," Variety says.
