The buzz: Michael Mann works his magic with an examination that gives you pause. "Without ever telling viewers what to think or how to feel, it raises more questions about the corruption of crime and crime fighting than any expose or thesis," the Baltimore Sun says.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
The gist: All the old toys, uh, characters are back and going under the ice this time. Don't be fooled because the name implies a topsy-turvy timeline. PG
Starring: Voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Simon Pegg and Queen Latifah.
The buzz: It's the third movie, so don't expect more of the same magic. "If Up is the animated equivalent of an ice cream sundae, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is the Popsicle: Neither as rich nor as memorable, but more than welcome on a long, hot summer day," the New York Daily News says.

The gist: A costume drama about a Parisian seductress who needs to retire because she's getting a little long in the tooth. Surprisingly, it's not Michelle Pfeiffer's biography. R
Starring: Pfeiffer, Rupert Friend, Kathy Bates and Felicity Jones.
The buzz: Or is it a biography? In a way, yes it is. "Michelle Pfeiffer is back, and her reappearance in Cheri, her best role in quite some time, underlines not only how much she's been missed but also how much the world of film has lost by her absence," the L.A. Times says.
Whatever Works
The gist: Wow, a Woody Allen comedy set in New York about an older man and a younger woman. Glad to see he's stretching himself. PG-13
Starring: Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Begley Jr., Patricia Clarkson, Henry Cavill, Kristen Johnston and Michael McKean.
The buzz: Decidedly mixed. "While the film is slightly better than similar efforts Allen made between the '90s and his recent time in Europe, it's both too broad and too shallow," the New York Daily News says.
