On TV this weekend

FRIDAY

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, 8 p.m., Fox A bunch of new episodes that try to prove the education system isn't failing by pitting kids against adults who already failed it.

The Chopping Block, 8 p.m., NBC Marco Pierre White makes a signature dish using only ingredients found in bottles and jars. Big deal; we've been doing that since college.

The Goode Family, 8:30 p.m., ABC Helen finds out that Bliss' community service job is fake. Like anyone really picks up trash for a living.

Margaret Cho: Beautiful, 11 p.m., Showtime Listening to Margaret rail against conventional beauty sounds about as appealing as chewing fistfuls of gravel.

SATURDAY

A Capitol Fourth, 8 p.m., PBS Explosions + Jimmy Smits + Barry Manilow + Aretha Franklin = D.C.

Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, 9 p.m., NBC Explosions + Rob Thomas + Jewel + Kenny Chesney + Katharine McPhee + Jordin Sparks = New York.

Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular 10 p.m., CBS Explosions + Craig Ferguson + Neil Diamond = Boston.

SUNDAY

SEASON PREMIERE Ruby, 8 p.m., Style Wow, a reality show about weight loss that actually makes the protagonist seem like a person and not a pudgy punchline. Amazing the network renewed it.

Angel and the Badman, 9 p.m., Hallmark John Wayne's grandson + Lou Diamond Phillips + Luke Perry + Hallmark = Western. This equation doesn't add up.

Miss Marple: A Pocket Full of Rye, 9 p.m., PBS Another Agatha Christie mystery. At least it'll give mom something to watch.
