Here's the news that local aspiring movie stars have waited for: An open casting call for extras to appear in Dolphin Tale will happen today at Ruth Eckerd Hall.
Brief interviews with applicants will begin at 11 a.m. at the entertainment venue at 1111 McMullen-Booth Road in Clearwater. They will continue until 5 p.m. but the earlier you arrive, the better. You can bet the lines will be long, so patience is urged. These are only auditions for background performers who may be used anytime during the shoot that begins Sept. 27 and continues through Dec. 10. Only Florida residents are eligible, suggesting that some kind of pay may be involved. The Florida tax incentive program that helped persuade Background Entertainment and Alcon Entertainment to film Dolphin Tale here applies only to money spent on Florida residents and businesses.
No acting experience is necessary, so don't go in there delivering that Hamlet soliloquy you've been rehearsing. All types and ethnicities are welcome. No appointments will be scheduled, so be prepared to wait.
You must bring a recent head shot photograph or digital photo. All minors must have their Social Security numbers and date of birth for the necessary child labor permits. You will be photographed again for audition records, so arrive neatly groomed and dressed.
"Wear more than just a T-shirt to give us an idea of what type of clothing you may have in your wardrobe," reads the announcement from the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Film Commission.
"If you are college age, dress hip and trendy. Wear conservative casual attire if you are clean cut, or wear more urban and edgy if you are less conservative. Layered clothing and accessories look great in photos. If you are a business type, look very upscale and sharp. Know your measurements and clothing sizes. Women should know current bust, waist and hip measurements, dress size, pant and shoe sizes. Men should know collar, sleeve length, coat size, waist, inseam, shoe and hat size if you have it. Please give us your exact sizes."

Dolphin Tale is based on the story of Winter the dolphin, a resident at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where much of the filming will occur. The movie is set to star Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr. and Ashley Judd.
