Frank Langella flick opens Sarasota Film Festival

The Sarasota Film Festival's opening night selection has become a showcase for future Academy Award players, after The Messenger in 2009 and eventual best supporting actor winner Christopher Plummer in Beginners last year. We'll see if the mojo continues with Frank Langella in Robot and Frank, kicking off the 14th annual festival on April 13. Langella joins indie filmmaker Todd Solondz (Dark Horse, Happiness) as this year's top honorees, with actors Dominic Monaghan and Ashley Bell from the horror flick The Day also attending. The 10-day festival concludes April 22 with Joe Berlinger's documentary Under African Skies, profiling music legend Paul Simon and his Graceland recordings. More than 230 features, documentaries and shorts from 30 nations will be presented. Tickets are $12 for most screenings (packages range from $20 to $1,000) and are available at — Steve Persall, Times Movie Critic
