New movies for Aug. 21

New movies this week

Inglourious Basterds

The gist: Brad Pitt grows a moustache and hunts NAT-sees with a bunch of angry Jewish soldiers in Quentin Tarantino's latest bloodbath no one will get. R

Starring: Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Til Schweiger, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender, Mike Myers, Cloris Leachman and Samuel L. Jackson.

The buzz: It's Tarantino, so check your disbelief at the door, kids. "A violent fairy tale, an increasingly entertaining fantasia in which the history of World War II is wildly reimagined so that the cinema can play the decisive role in destroying the Third Reich," Variety says.

Shorts

The gist: Robert Rodriguez's series of tall tales revolving around a wish-granting, multicolored rock that falls from the sky. We're sure everyone's going to use its power for good, right? PG

Starring: Jon Cryer, William H. Macy, Leslie Mann, James Spader, Jimmy Bennett, Kat Dennings, Trevor Gagnon, and Leo Howard.

The buzz: "The two leads ... do a nice job holding the center of gravity while the film goes nuts around them," the Hollywood Reporter says. "Best of all, Shorts is short, finishing before you can truly get tired of all those wishes gone wrong."

Post Grad

The gist: The smartest girl in school finally graduates college and has to live in the real world. You mean you have to go to work every day?

Starring: Alexis Bledel, Zach Gilford, Rodrigo Santoro, Bobby Coleman, Fred Armisen, Jane Lynch, Carol Burnett and Michael Keaton.

The buzz: Feel familiar? "After watching Post Grad, you may wonder whether Hollywood will ever stop making generic comedies with zero tolerance for originality," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says.
