New movies this week
New Year's Eve
The gist: Every actor in Hollywood signs up to be in Garry Marshall's rom-com follow-up to Valentine's Day, probably simply to keep their SAG cards active. Do you think they work for scale? PG-13
The cast: Take a deep breath — Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Halle Berry, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Lea Michele, Jon Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Alyssa Milano, Seth Meyers, Larry Miller, Cherry Jones, Hector Elizondo, Matthew Broderick and Common.
The buzz: Do you think all those actors work for scale? They're sure phoning it in. "Offering around a dozen barely there, aggressively agreeable mini-stories spliced together and spit out with lawnmower-style eloquence, the film is pushed to punishing lengths by the engorged cast list," Variety moans. So, not worth $9, then?
The gist: It's like Adventures in Babysitting, but with Jonah Hill in the Elisabeth Shue role. It's before he lost 40 pounds, so we're guessing there's no subplot in which the oldest kid has a crush on him. R
The cast: Hill, Sam Rockwell, Ari Graynor, Max Records, Landry Bender and Kevin Hernandez.
The buzz: There isn't much sympathy for Jonah here. "The Sitter really fails in the physical comedy department with an assault of mean, humorless sight gags," the AP laments. Elisabeth Shue didn't have to put up with that.
