New movies

Fast & Furious

The gist: The sequel that should never have been made, starring all the people who didn't want to be in it the first time around. But, hey, Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez need love, too. PG-13

Starring: Diesel, Paul Walker, Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, John Ortiz, Laz Alonso, Gal Gadot and Shea Whigham.

The buzz: FOUR movies? Really? "A series that's provided a successful, moderately enjoyable ride up to now blows its tires, gasket and transmission on its way to flaming out in Fast & Furious," Variety admonishes.

The gist: Dumb teenagers live, laugh and love at a summer job. But oooh, this one is set in the '80s! R

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Stewart, Martin Starr, Paige Howard, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and Margarita Levieva.

The buzz: Seen it, yes, but it's decent. "With a keen affection for his own formative years, filmmaker Greg Mottola has crafted a funny and spunky amusement," the Hollywood Reporter says.

Play the Game

The gist: Matlock is an old guy in an assisted-living joint whose son tries to get him to sow his wilting oats a bit — even though the mere thought grosses us out. PG-13

Starring: Andy Griffith, Paul Campbell, Marla Sokoloff, Dora Roberts and Liz Sheridan.

The buzz: "Such broadly drawn characters and twists can easily be found on basic cable sitcoms before bedtime," the St. Pete Times says. "(Director Marc) Fienberg's movie may as well schedule matinees only."
