New movies for Jan. 6

New movies this week

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

The gist: Gary Oldman actually stars as a Brit again, this time as a spy hired back by his government to expose a double agent working for the Soviets in a remake of an adaptation of John Le Carre's novel. Ah, the Cold War, back when we knew damn well who our enemies were. R

The cast: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds and John Hurt.

The buzz: It's hard to make a story this complex into one movie— which is why the Alec Guinness version was a miniseries — but this still works. "It is one of the few films so visually absorbing, felicitous shot after shot, that its emotional coldness is noticed only at the end, when all the plot twists are unraveled in a solid piece of thinking-man's entertainment for upmarket thriller audiences," the Hollywood Reporter says.

The Devil Inside

The gist: If a taut, period spy thriller isn't your thing, there's always this one about a woman recruiting two exorcists to beat four demons out of her homicidal mother. R

The cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Suzan Crowley, Danny Trejo, B-Real and lots of makeup.

The buzz: There are no reviews available for this, presumably because the target audience is still working its after-school job. But wait, this one is rated R … what a quandary.
