Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The gist: Ron Perlman returns to the role he was born to play in Guillermo del Toro's awesome second take on the comic hero. All superhero stories should be translated this well. PG-13
Starring: Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Luke Goss, Seth MacFarlane, Anna Walton, Brian Steele and John Hurt.
The buzz: Even better than the first. "The Golden Army dazzles like something out of Jason and the Argonauts," Entertainment Weekly raves. "To make a comic-book fantasy this derivative yet this dazzling requires more than technique. It takes a director in touch with his inner hellboy."
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The gist: When Brendan Fraser isn't being chased by mummies, he's being chased by dinosaurs at the Earth's sci-fi core. In 3D, no less. PG
Starring: Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, and Anita Briem
The buzz: Just put on the glasses and shut it, okay? "It would be barely passable under normal circumstances, but in 3-D it's a circus of excellent FX," New York magazine qualifies.
The gist: A tiny Eddie Murphy pilots a giant Eddie Murphy body — he's out of water, get it? Does Eddie even make movies for adults anymore? PG
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Elizabeth Banks, Gabrielle Union, Ed Helms, Judah Friedlander and Pat Kilbane.
The buzz: Wow, this one is so good there's no advance screenings. It's got to be at least as good as The Adventures of Pluto Nash, right?
