Kung Fu Panda
The gist: An animated (literally) take on chop-socky flicks that follows, well, a panda learning kung fu. Get ready for the kids to beat on each other after watching this one. PG
Starring: The voices of Jack Black, Lucy Liu, Dustin Hoffman, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane and Jackie Chan.
The buzz: Black makes the movie, which is a hoot. "There's no more perfect voice than Jack Black's for a boisterous bear with high hopes and low chances of reaching them," the St. Pete Times says. "This performance ranks among animation's finest."
You Don't Mess With the Zohan
The gist: Eschewing his serious roles, this is pure Adam Sandler formula: An Israeli commando fakes his own death so he can move to New York to be a hair stylist. We're sure it'll be nothing but highbrow jokes. PG-13
Starring: Adam Sandler, John Turturro, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Nick Swardson and Rob Schneider.
The buzz: Truly, don't mess with the Zohan. "The off-the-wall comedy of Robert Smigel and Judd Apatow leaves a mark on the script, but it would require a talent of Peter Sellers' magnitude to conquer this material, and he's not around," Variety says. You know, Peter Sellers. The Pink Panther? Dr. Strangelove? Oh, you kids.
The gist: Adam Carolla proves he's not all snide jackassery by playing an unemployed carpenter trying to make the Olympic boxing team. With St. Pete's own Jeff Lacey in a cameo. See more on Page 24. R
Starring: Carolla, Heather Juergensen and Lacy.
The buzz: It's actually a warm comedy that should have gotten more attention. "The Hammer is authentic in the ring, and consistently funny outside of it," the St. Pete Times gushes. Your only chance to see it in a theater is at 8 or 10 p.m. tonight at Muvico Centro Ybor 20. Proceeds from the $10 tickets are going to the American Red Cross.
