New movies this week
Shrek Forever After
The gist: Shrek is tricked into an alternate reality where he never existed in Far Far Away, thereby missing millions in royalty checks and merchandising opportunities. Oh, and Puss in Boots is fat. PG
Starring: The voices of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, Jon Hamm, Kathy Griffin and Kristen Schaal.
The buzz: Reviews are split on this one, ranging from the movie being the best in the series to it being another pointless installation. "Everyone involved fulfills his or her job requirements adequately. But the magic is gone, and Shrek Forever After is no longer an ogre phenomenon to reckon with," Entertainment Weekly pines.
The gist: How the hell did they turn a mildly amusing Saturday Night Live sketch that lasts 20 seconds into a full-length movie? It's probably best not to ask. R
Starring: Will Forte, Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, a fat Val Kilmer, an old Powers Boothe and Maya Rudolph.
The buzz: No reviews are in yet, but you know how those SNL skits fare when they get turned into movies. Well, Wayne's World did okay, but that's the only time.
The gist: A documentary about three kids who race in the World Karting Association's National Pavement Series in the hopes of one day reaching the pinnacle of dull motorsports that entail turning left for three hours, NASCAR. PG
Starring: Brandon Warren, Joshua Hobson and Annabeth Barnes.
The buzz: Well, we'll admit maybe there's more skill to it than that. "It's a darned entertaining way to get a handle on a sport that can seem like a bunch of cars doing circles for a crowd that seems most interested in seeing that next epic wreck," the Orlando Sentinel says.
