New movies this week
The gist: Want a feel-good movie for tough times? Too bad, because the machines took over despite three movies and a bad TV series. Now, what can the director of Charlie's Angels do with it? PG-13
Starring: Christian Bale, Anton Yelchin, Sam Worthington, Bryce Dallas Howard, Common, Jadagrace, Moon Bloodgood and Helena Bonham Carter.
The buzz: Special effects do not a movie make. This ain't a music video, McG. "The most timid in the series," the Miami Herald admonishes. "There's no invention in it, no sense of discovery. Only the impressively orchestrated action sequences feel fresh."
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
The gist: If our favorite security guard is tired of working in places where all the stuff he's guarding magically comes to life, he could seek employment at places other than museums, maybe? PG
Starring: Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria, Christopher Guest, Alain Chabat, Robin Williams and Jonah Hill.
The buzz: Even as a kids' film, it's not working for the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert: "Its premise is lame, its plot relentlessly predictable, its characters with personalities that would distinguish picture books."
The gist: Another goofball Wayans comedy that pokes fun and film genres; in this case, dance contests that underprivileged teens must win in order to maintain their coolness. How long did it take to make this, like, a week? PG-13
Starring: Damon Wayans Jr., Craig Wayans, Shoshana Bush, Essence Atkins and Affion Crockett.
The buzz: No preview screenings, and we hear nothing but complaints from critics about these Wayans movies, but they obviously earn enough for people to keep making them.
