New movies this week
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
The gist: A man and a woman who obviously aren't Persian jump from video-game consoles to the big screen. Ubisoft is likely hoping that Jake Gyllenhaal can make the switch from slight and thoughtful to burly and action-oriented so they can make more of these flicks. PG-13
Starring: Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina and Toby Kebbell.
The buzz: It's a video-game movie, so you can't expect it to be good, but as far as the genre goes, you could do worse. "Prince of Persia is woven of recycled fibers, but by the slipping standards of summertime entertainment, it's a magic carpet ride," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reasons.
Sex and the City 2
The gist: Hmmm … rich, overbearing women of a certain age living lavish lifestyles and drinking wine at 11 a.m. have their problems, too. And they won't let us forget it. R
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Jason Lewis and Mario Cantone.
The buzz: There are a few diehard fan critics who like this one, but most people hate it. "Sex and the City 2 isn't a feature film as much as it is consumer porn. The audience is not asked to relate to the characters, or at least what we remember of them, as much as to their shoes, their bags, their apartments, their couture, their stuff," the Arizona Republic admonishes.
