Michael Jackson's This Is It
The gist: There was this little-known pop singer named Michael Jackson who passed away recently — you may have heard of him — and he was planning a comeback series of concerts in London. Wouldn't it be a great idea to cash in on his death by making a concert movie out of rehearsal footage? Released on Wednesday. PG
Starring: The King of Pop, natch.
The buzz: If you look past the grisly spectacle of ghoulishly mining the man's death for profit, then this is a decent concert movie. "Differing greatly from the rough, casual mood of many behind-the-scenes pop docs, this one is instead of a piece with Jackson's body of work: dazzling and strange, blurring the line between fantasy and reality," the L.A. Times says.
Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg
The gist: A documentary looking at the life of Gertrude Berg, the creator, principal writer and star of The Goldbergs, a popular radio show about a Jewish family in New York that eventually became a TV sitcom. We've been watching the formula ever since. No MPAA rating
Starring: Gertrude Berg, among others.
The buzz: Yes, kids, there were celebrities before the Internet. "The film could be described as Exhibit A in a study of media celebrity and collective forgetfulness in the age of information overload," the New York Times says.
