New movies

The gist: Fact-based story about a woman who reports her kid missing, then gets a different kid from the police, who tell her to shut up about it. Who knew cops in 1928 L.A. were so crooked? R

Starring: Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan, Colm Feore, Amy Ryan and Michael Kelly.

The buzz: Reviews are split, with some saying this Clint Eastwood vehicle is the best thing since toaster strudel and others saying it just doesn't come together. Middle of the road: "While the neo-Gothic tale is inherently intriguing, the film should inspire strong emotion, but deliberate pacing and a contained sense of melodrama make it a surprisingly passive experience," USA Today says.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

The gist: Kevin Smith's filthy, filthy movie about two friends who decide to make amateur porn to pay their bills. What could go wrong? R

Starring: Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinson, Traci Lords, Katie Morgan, Ricky Mabe, Jeff Anderson and Jason Mewes.

The buzz: It's about people making a skin flick — you're expecting Gone With the Wind? "It would be too much to say that what Smith has come up with here is inspired, but it is pretty funny and very energetic," Variety lauds.

The gist: Another pretzel from Guy Ritchie, who throws cockney stylings and ridiculous nicknames at the London real estate market. R

Starring: Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, Thandie Newton, Mark Strong, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Toby Kebbell and Jeremy Piven.

The buzz: Like other Ritchie productions, this one is great, but can make you weary from trying to follow it. "RocknRolla is a kickass crime drama that just doesn't know to quit while it's ahead," Rolling Stone qualifies.

The Haunting of Molly Hartley

The gist: Molly's mom is crazy and now so is she. Ooooh, scary. PG-13

Starring: Chace Crawford, Haley Bennett, Shannon Marie Woodward, Shanna Collins and AnnaLynne McCord.

The buzz: No previews, and it's coming out on Halloween. Opening weekend or bust.

Eden Lake

The gist: Another nasty flick designed to scare yuppies into thinking nowhere is safe. This time: Crazy teenagers at a couple's serene lake getaway. R

Starring: Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender.

The buzz: Seriously, we're going camping in a couple of weeks. Will it be safe? "Eden Lake has the trappings of a low-IQ thriller but it's really a contemptible tract feeding the prejudices of the U.K.'s rightwing tabloids that claim the country is overrun by teenagers wielding knives," the Hollywood Reporter says.

The Other End of the Line

The gist: An Indian woman working at a call center hooks up with a caller from San Francisco, so she flies there and experiences the inevitable culture clash. Did we mention she's betrothed to some guy via arranged marriage. PG-13

Starring: Jesse Metcalfe and Shriya Saran.

The buzz: There are no reviews that offer anything in the way of guidance on this one, but we reckon it would be a good way to get back on your sweetie's happy side after you scared her at that Halloween party.
