New movies this week
The gist: Imagine if the gang from 1996's Swingers grew up, got married and had to deal with relationship problems on a tropical island. Yeah, we didn't think it sounded so hot, either. PG-13.
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, Faizon Love, Kali Hawk and Jean Reno.
The buzz: Did we really want to see Mike and Trent grow up and argue with their wives? "Couples Retreat is fluff, a genially banal message comedy about learning to live with your spouse by staying true to yourself," Entertainment Weekly says.
It Might Get Loud
The gist: Three generations of electric guitar masters — Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White — talk about how they got where they are, how they create their signature sounds and what their music means to them. Plus, they finally meet as the climax of this doc. PG
Starring: Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White, strangely enough.
The buzz: If you like these three musicians, you've already bought your ticket. "In nearly every moment, an incredibly rich mix of their music, groundbreaking, defining, which alone would almost be enough. That It Might Get Loud comes with a righteous story too is a lovely bonus," the L.A. Times says.
The gist: It's The Blair Witch Project set in a San Diego house, complete with shaky camera work and viral marketing campaign, but this time something actually happens. R
Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Friedrichs, Amber Armstrong and Ashley Palmer.
The buzz: Since director Oren Peli shot it in a week in his own home, what do you (and the stuidos) have to lose? "With a $15,000 budget too puny to empty a petty-cash drawer, the no-frills Paranormal Activity comes packed with thrills," Rolling Stone says.
Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
The festival celebrates 20 years starting Friday with a 6 p.m. opening at the Tampa Theatre and runs through Oct. 18. Turn to Page 35 for more details.
