Rootstock

Featuring Tribal Style (above), Breakdown, the Rukus, Anonymous, D'Visitors, Laws, Dynasty, Hip Abduction, Mic Deluxx, Blenda, Fader, Badda Skat, Jinx

FRIDAY 7 p.m. New World Brewery, 1313 E. Eighth Ave., Ybor City. (813) 248-4969.

Cream-of-the-crop local reggae and hip-hop artists team up for the fifth installment of Rootstock. St. Pete's fathers of roots reggae, Tribal Style, will perform, as will female rapper Dynasty. The little mama from Queens has a refreshing hip-hop style, pumping up crowds with clever, but not dirty, lyrics. And quick-talking Plant High School senior Anonymous makes an appearance before getting ready to study dramatic writing at NYU.

Gavin Rossdale

With Nico Vega

MONDAY 7 p.m. Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. $19.99 (727) 786-2276.

Fifteen years ago, with a foot firmly planted on a Big Muff pedal, greasy-haired Gavin Rossdale and Bush were soaking up grunge glory. Today, Rossdale's riffs are clean and poppy, his hair trim, and his wife, Gwen Stefani, is making far more headlines. Still, Rossdale tromps on unfazed, performing songs primarily from solo album WANDERlust (which trades the '90s-style muck for music in the vein of Snow Patrol). But Bush fans shouldn't despair — Machinehead, Glycerine and Comedown have been showing up on the setlists, too. Rossdale's even got a cool cover of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide.

Eric Church

FRIDAY 7 p.m. The Dallas Bull, 3322 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $9.95. (813) 987-2855.

He toasts the folks who live by a time clock, not a trust fund. He wears boots to church and takes time out to pledge allegiance to Merle Haggard. If you hadn't guessed, Skoal-dippin', Jack-swiggin' Eric Church is all country. Church picked up steam after opening for Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley. Now, considering tickets for his sold-out shows are being scalped in parking lots, he may join them atop the contemporary country ranks sooner than later.

Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles

SATURDAY 2 and 8 p.m., and SUNDAY 2 and 7 p.m. Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N W.C. MacInnes Place, Tampa. $39.50. (813) 229-7827.

As Beatles tribute acts go, Rain is one of the biggies (up there with the Fab Four). The group has studied the Beatles' famous performances extensively and insists on meticulous re-enactments. In fact, Joey Curatolo, who plays a pretty excellent Paul McCartney, recently learned to play bass left-handed to up the ante. They'll depict the Beatles' evolution in five stages (from Ed Sullivan to Abbey Road) and offer up some amusing '60s commercials for good measure.

The Heavy Pets

FRIDAY 9 p.m. Dunedin Brewery, 937 Douglas Ave., Dunedin. $5. (727) 736-0606.

Warm up for Tropical Heatwave on Saturday with genre-bending jam act the Heavy Pets. The South Florida-based group, which plays Dunedin Brewery pretty regularly, just scored a slot at Bonnaroo. If you like Phish or Perpetual Groove, you'll probably like the Heavy Pets.

Queensryche

TUESDAY 8 p.m. Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $37.50-$60. (727) 791-7400.

A Queensryche concert is like opera for metal fans. Singer Geoff Tate delivers grandiose highs and lows, and the guitarists crank out more noodles than the Chinese buffet. The prog-metal monarchs return to play songs solely from American Soldier (a concept album about war) as well as Rage for Order and Empire (which contained the hit ballad Silent Lucidity).

Tim Easton and Rachel Goodrich

With John Gold and the Old Souls

SUNDAY 8 p.m. New World Brewery, 1313 E. Eighth Ave., Ybor City. $8. (813) 248-4969.

When your friends and mentors include Lucinda Williams, Wilco and the Jayhawks, maybe good songwriting comes easy. Tim Easton's croaky moan and jangly folk-rock songs are pretty Dylanesque, though he's got modern pop and country in his back pocket too. Miami's super-groovy folk-jazz artist Rachel Goodrich, who often comes equipped with guitar, keyboard, ukulele, kazoo, harmonica, recorder, xylophone, banjo, mandolin, spoons, pots, pans, and more, is a serious talent — and she's seriously funny, too.
