The surrogate
It begins with a woman who yearns for a baby and another who is willing and able to give her one. You can imagine the motives of the prospective parents. But what about the woman willing to carry a baby, give birth and then walk away?
Friday Night Rewind It doesn't matter which team you cheer for. We've got video previews of every high school football program in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando County.
FRIDAY 7:30 p.m. Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N W.C. MacInnes Place, Tampa. $49.50-$60.50. (800) 955-1045.
Beatles tribute favorite the Fab Four takes you back to where you once belonged with spick-and-span renditions of the classics. The group has the Beatles mannerisms pinned too, and undergoes wardrobe changes to represent the band's storied evolution. Dana Carvey (whose music opinions can be trusted) calls 'em "the toppermost of the poppermost — seriously, the Fab Four blew me away."
Spritz on your finest patchouli for the return of jam man Col. Bruce Hampton. It's a little Allman Brothers, a little Widespread Panic, and a little weird, but after more than 5,000 shows over a 40-year span, Col. Bruce's bluegrass-jazz-roots-rock mash-up has become quite celebrated. He also appeared in the Academy Award-winning Sling Blade.
The Warren Brothers
FRIDAY 7 p.m. The Dallas Bull, 3322 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $9.95. (813) 987-2855.
Though they like to poke fun at themselves for lacking a smash hit (their last two albums are titled Well Deserved Obscurity and Barely Famous Hits), hometown boys the Warren Brothers, above, have plenty to take pride in. Their songwriting credits include work for some of country's biggest stars — Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Lynyrd Skynrd. They've also served as judges (and comic relief) on Nashville Star and starred in their own CMT reality show.
WMNF Americana Fest
Featuring Hayes Carll, Barkin' Barney and the Tall Boys, Blind Buddy Moody, Have Gun, Will Travel, Memphis Train Union, Mojo Gurus, Nine Volts, Rebekah Pulley, Ronny Elliott, Ted Lukas, Will Quinlan and The Diviners
Americana Fest headliner Hayes Carll, right, compares his first performances at rough-and-tumble Texas bars to "reading poetry at a frat party." Don't worry Hayes, our crowd will get you! Carll channels Dylan and Waits and professes his troubles (often wittily so) with religion and booze. WMNF bills the local support as the "top Americana bands in the state of Florida" — and that's pretty darn accurate. Have Gun, Will Travel was just featured on NPR, and Will Quinlan and the Diviners recently packed their CD release party. Barkin' Barney and the Tall Boys offer snarly, satirical stompers.
The Stick Martin Show CD release party
SUNDAY 8 p.m. The Kennedy, 2408 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. (813) 259-9669.
Pasco rock and hip-hop act the Stick Martin Show shuffles energetically through happy hours and cover gigs five or more nights a week. New disc Thrilla, above, comes with 23 songs and features more than 25 guest musicians from around the Bay. Green Elephants is a funky voyage through smoke and silliness, and To Be An Aging Hipster … well you can guess what that's about.
Slick Rick
With D25 and AWOL
SATURDAY 7 p.m. State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $20-$25. (727) 895-3045.
Even if you've heard Slick Rick's La Di Da Di a hundred times, you can't help but stay tuned to hear where the day takes him. Everyday grooming sounds fascinating (oh no, he forgot his Kangol hat!) thanks to his playful swagger and conversational delivery. The Bronx-by-way-of-London narrator famously has been sampled by Snoop Dogg, the Notorious B.I.G., and Montell Jordan (This Is How We Do It). Earlier this year New York Gov. David Paterson granted Slick Rick a full pardon, clearing him of attempted murder charges.
