If you grew up in the 1980s, Journey likely provided the soundtrack of your formative years. And with tunes like Don't Stop Believing still occasionally taking a starring role in today's pop culture, a whole new generation is discovering the one-time giants of the FM radio dial. Hard to believe it has been 35 years since a group of jazz-fusion musicians came together in San Francisco to create a group they envisioned as a backup band for local artists. But their humble beginnings — and longtime indifference from critics — can't hide an impressive run of commercial success that includes nearly a dozen top 20 anthems and worldwide album sales surpassing 75-million. These days, the band has been re-energized by a new album — Revelation — and the addition of Arnel Pineda, a Philippines-born singer whose pipes are eerily similar to legendary Journey frontman Steve Perry, who left the band in the late '90s. Journey plays the Ford Amphitheatre in Tampa on Wednesday along with Heart and Cheap Trick. Bassist Ross Valory, one of two original founding members remaining (the other is guitarist Neal Schon), recently chatted about the band's history and reborn success.

Does it surprise you that Journey's not yet in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? You've been eligible since 2000.

I'm not surprised at all. I don't lose sleep over it. It's all politics. Without being either negative or positive about it . . . sooner or later it's gonna happen. I have a feeling it's going to happen sooner, but I'm still not going to hold my breath.

Does having Arnel Pineda on board put to rest the questions about Steve Perry returning to the band?

With the fans and the public, yes, that does put it to rest. Even if we hadn't found Arnel, it would not have been any more likely than it has been since 1996 that (Perry) would return to the band.

Did Journey really find Pineda using the Internet?

Neal Schon, our guitarist, was cruising the 'Net literally late one night, and literally in the 11th hour of completing our lineup for doing the record . . . and he was at YouTube and he just typed in "Journey singer" or "Journey vocalist," and there he is, watching this guy sing these songs. He couldn't believe it.

What was your reaction when you heard him sing in person the first time?

Goose bumps. And that's the way it was for all of us.

It makes for a nice fairy-tale year for you and the gang.

It's a Cinderella story. Even Rolling Stone, which has never liked this band, has a story. And that's not to be glib or superficial. It's just the perfect story for a band's comeback.

Hey Perryloons, keep those egos as steve is journey. who knows without Journey Perry might just be stucked in the turkeyhill farm. Perry by himself doesnt sound journey, he can be just like Pop singers with one-hit wonder and be gone.

Complaining about SP not back w/ Journey? Why not ask SP himself. Why even blame Neil or AP? Or, AP can't be a Journey 'cause he's Asian. Or Obama can't be president 'cause he's AA. Why didn't anyone complain when Luciano Pavaroti sang My Way?

I agree with Dan and BD. Steve Perry put them on the top. They made hits by and with Steve. All the articles I have read about the new Journey ~ Revelation, don't approve of Arnel redoing the Hits. Just like the HWOF...Steve was and is Journey!
by BD Jul 30, 2008 3:35 PM
If and when they get inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame they better invite Steve Perry to share in their glory!! Without him they would still be playing small venues in San Fran. Why else to they feel the need to keep trying to clone Steve yet again!

I just love Arnel. He's the best singer EVER. His voice is much better than Perry's voice today. He is by far hotter than any other singers too. Ross may be old but he is a great bass player. The greatest bass player of ALL TIME I tell ya.

hoorey!!!see you all tonight co-fans of journey, finally! welcome to sunshine state, surely everybody will be rockin' tonight, go,go,go get tickets before you will beg outside!

Journey is the US's Beatles??? BLASPHEMY!! That is like equating Meatloaf with Elvis!
by susmaryosep Jul 30, 2008 1:57 PM
Even with yellow pants, AP's attracting more fans around the world day-by-day. Maybe he'll try electric green next time around. What else can I say???

Both my husband and I grew up listening to Journey. We are going to Tampa tonite to see them in concert with Cheap Trick and Heart. We are going with our 20 year old son who begged us for a ticket. True rock and roll never dies. It just moves on!

Give me a break, Valory, Scoen and Cain are legitimate Journey band members, but without Steve Perry they are little more than a cover band ( at least when performing the original hits). At least Heart still has the Wilson Sisters.

Where is Randy Jackson?
by Pakbet Jul 29, 2008 5:21 PM
Back to back SOLD OUT concerts. Wow, not even with Augeri or Scott Soto has Journey seen anything like this post-Perry. Must be Arnel's yellow pants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFBl9ZooKys

Journey did not kill RnR. Bruce Springsteen did more damage. Journey is US's Beatles in terms of lasting songs. Ever hear the radio playing Born in the USA these days? No one could carry the torch that's why it died. Rejoice JRNY is very much alive.
by Bob Jul 29, 2008 4:23 PM
Tomorrow Night at the Ford Theater in Tampa!! See you there!
by Jack Jul 29, 2008 4:09 PM
There's something in this guy that I couldn't resist listening to. His powerful raspy soaring tenor voice is so addicting I band became an instant die-hard fan. I have bought their REVELATION album and concert tickets as well.
by Scott Jul 29, 2008 3:32 PM
Sold out-LA concert @ Greek and that's even 2 months from now. There must be something with this guy why people wanted to see him. My friend was an instant fan when I showed him AP's clips on "you tube". btw, nice article.

September 9th can't come soon enough!!! We'll be rocking with them at DTE.
by Mike Jul 29, 2008 2:04 PM
Journey is a terrible band. The Journey/REO/Styx trifecta killed rock and roll. They are responsible for all the crap we have been force fed on the radio for the last 30 years. They should be banished for their crimes against humanity.
by Joycelin Jul 29, 2008 1:46 PM
Journey is overdue for its induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Three decades of great music. Their new CD Revelation debut in the top 5 and is on top 20 for 7 weeks now and still counting; and their 08 summer concerts are sold-outs!
by jambase999 Jul 29, 2008 1:43 PM
Category F5 twister named 'Arnel' came to Dallas Sun nite! Took our 3 kids to see amazing concert with Journey, Heart& CT. HAD A BLAST! The band is back with a vengeance!
by chris Jul 29, 2008 1:40 PM
Lots of classics with Journey. They should be in the hall. No question. All music ages, theirs never did.
by Bob Jul 29, 2008 12:52 PM
Revelation is the best Journey album yet and Arnel is Awesome
by ewww Jul 29, 2008 9:27 AM
Like gag me with a pitch fork. They sang sappy top 40ish tunes in the 80s. Neal Schon and crew need to stop already. Bad band bad songs bad memories .
by Will Jul 28, 2008 8:57 PM
The NEW Revelation ROCKS... Check it out!
by Khan Jul 28, 2008 7:43 PM
Finally, a Ross Valory interview: short but succint. Rock on Journey. You found yourselves a gem in Arnel.
