Deerhoof
With Experimental Dental School, Flying
SUNDAY 9 p.m. Crowbar, 1812 17th St. N, Ybor City. $12-$14. (813) 241-8600.
Deerhoof: experimental and innovative, or just confusing? There's really a little of both going on. Bassist and vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki hops around, shrieks and sings in a childlike tone. The group's song structures and time signatures are weird enough that a first-time listener might conclude that something has gone terribly wrong. But there's something about it all that's beautifully chaotic, like pop music played as a jazz jam session.
Disturbing the Peace Fest 11
Featuring Retard-o-Bot, Klik, Trace of Day, Tailgunner Joe and the Earls of Slander, the Turncoat, Military Junior, Elysian Sex Drive, Mogul Street Reserve, the Stick Martin Show, the Semis, Tommy John and the Central Avenue Ballers and more
MONDAY 5 p.m. Jannus Landing, Club Tamiami, Vintage Ultra Lounge, downtown St. Petersburg. $10. (727) 786-2276.
The industrial wackiness of Retard-o-Bot could likely "disturb the peace" on its own, but this fest's coordinators have jam-packed this bill with more strong local talent. That includes southern party rockers Tailgunner Joe, progressive jammers Mogul Street Reserve and prolific power-popsters the Semis. The annual fest is touting the "largest VIP list ever," since local musicians, artists, film makers, promoters, writers, actors, designers and more get in free. (Let them know who you are at myspace.com/disturbingthepeacefest).
Tyga
With Metro Station, Cash Cash, the White Tie Affair
THURSDAY 6 p.m. Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. $15. (727) 786-2276.
Signed recently to Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment imprint, 18-year-old Tyga claims he's "the hottest export out of Compton since NWA." While his tunes are far from the gangster rap of Dre and Ice Cube, they're creative in their own right. The heavily tattooed, wayfarer-wearing rapper had a summer hit in Coconut Juice, a playful, easygoing track featuring his cousin and Gym Glass Heroes frontman Travis McCoy. In the wake of their big hit Shake It, headliner Metro Station is worth sticking around for.
Mockstars Halloween
Featuring Carnival of Crue (Motley Crue tribute), Supertzar (Black Sabbath tribute)
FRIDAY 8 p.m. Boomerz, 6990 Seminole Blvd., Seminole. $10-$12. (727) 391-7066.
Seminole's longtime live music venue, Boomerz, is making a few changes. The club (largely known for death metal) wants to bring rock n' roll back to its stage, say enthusiastic new promoters. And the venue's Mockstars Halloween show is a fun-filled start. There will be a costume contest for the Best Rock Star Lookalike, so come wearing AC/DC, Dee Snider, or Kid Rock apparel (just throwing a few ideas out there).
Chiodos
With Silverstein, A Skylit Drive, Alesana, Escape the Fate
SATURDAY 6:30 p.m. Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. $25. (727) 786-2276.
For coming from dreary Davison, Mich. (just outside of Flint), Chiodos are a spark of energy and life. Fans can attest that the genre-bending band is passionate, intense and often fanatical in its a manic mix of metal, classical, screamo and more. Its vocals are operatic and high-registered, with a few painstaking screams; song titles like Bulls Make Money, Bears Make Money, Pigs Get Slaughtered, are over the top. And thanks to the members' musical theater backgrounds, the live show is highly animated.
Jimmy Buffett
SUNDAY 3 p.m. Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. Free. (813) 740-2446.
Two days before Election Day, Florida legend Jimmy Buffett will perform at Barack Obama's "Last Chance for Change" rally. Has the tropical troubadour pulled a Dixie Chicks on his GOP fans? Jimmy says nah. "Everybody knows my politics," he told USA Today. "But half my audience is Republicans — and that's OK — people should be communicating, which is the biggest factor to me." Two free tickets per person are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pick-up locations are listed on fl.barackobama.com.
