With the still-lousy price of gas these days, Orlando might as well be Bangkok. And yet, for some slightly irritating reason, O-Town is seducing more and more big concert names, forcing us to fire up the Family Truckster and head east for our musical jones. But you can't catch 'em all, right? And this week poses a tricky dilemma of divas: Will it be Sade or Britney, both of whom are playing the Amway Center?
First up, on Sunday, it's Sade and her Soldier of Love show. Now you're not going to get a ton spectacle here, but you will get genuine singing (and talent, what a concept!) from the 52-year-old dream-weaver of somnambulant sexy-time pop (Smooth Operator, No Ordinary Love).
Sade doesn't tour a bunch, so your chances to see her are slimmer than your future chances to see Brit-Brit, who on Wednesday won't actually sing (jeez, is her mike even on?) but will throw so much hubba-hubba, it might be worth it just for the spray-tanned overload. Plus there's a strong chance the 29-year-old tabloid titillator will do something "viral," allowing you to say, "I was at the Orlando show when she [get your mind in the gutter and fill in the blank]."
As for the opening acts, Britney has Nicki Minaj, my favorite hip-hopper since Kanye West. Sade has supa-smoove R&B star John Legend, who's always hot. So that's a tossup there. But ultimately? I say take a date to Sade and Legend. Then fire up YouTube on Thursday to see what you missed at Britney. As for Minaj, crazy girl will be headlining these parts soon enough.
Here's the ticket info:
