Superstar DJ Steve Aoki is booked to headline a concert at the Amphitheatre, a massive Ybor City dance club, during the Republican National Convention in Tampa.
The event will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Amphitheatre, 1609 E Seventh Ave. It is described as "invite-only" with a limited number of free tickets available to the public with an RSVP. To register, see rockthevote.tumblr.com.
The event is organized by Rock the Vote, which aims to get young voters active in the voting process, and StartUp RockOn, a coalition of businesses designed to showcase "America's start-up and entrepreneurial culture." Pringles and Tumblr are listed as sponsors.
In addition to performing at massive electronic festivals around the world, Aoki is a familiar face in Florida, most recently at the Ritz Ybor in May. He performed at this year's mtvU Woodie Awards and is the founder of the influential electronic music label Dim Mak, and his latest album, Wonderland, came out in January.
Another celeb in town
Ty Pennington, former host of TV's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, will be in Tampa on Aug. 28 for a community service project that will build a home for a deserving military veteran.
Along with Craftsman, Sears Heroes at Home, Rebuilding Together, NextGen Home built by Champion and Bank of America, Pennington — along with RNC delegates and local officials — will build half the home in Tampa, with the other half being build during the DNC in Charlotte. (The finished project will reside in Charlotte.)
The public is invited to attend and to meet Pennington, but only delegates and invited guests will be building the house. The event is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Encore Development, located at Harrison Street, Central Street and Governor Street in Tampa.
