Five bay area June concerts rise to Top 5

Keep Huey Lewis away from me. The last time Mr. Hip to Be Square and I went mano-a-mano, let's just say he was walking on a thin line — and I was about to unleash the power of fists. He didn't like my interview questions; I didn't like his interview answers. So because of our sordid history, I cannot in good conscience recommend Huey Lewis and the News' Friday gig at the Taste of Pinellas at St. Petersburg's Vinoy Park. If you're digging one of the other Tasty acts (America on Friday; Suite Caroline and Martina McBride on Saturday; Mitchel Musso on Sunday), that's cool. But you won't find Sports Boy on the following list …

Sean Daly's top 5 June concerts

1BROOKS & DUNN (Ford Amphitheatre, June 11): Kix and Ronnie, the most successful duo of any genre in the SoundScan era, are calling it quits after 20 years together. I'm not a huge fan, although I dig Boot Scootin' Boogie as much as the next Hopalong. And I'll certainly be at this stop on their Last Rodeo Tour. You should go, too. First of all, we can totally carpool. Plus in this day of ephemeral artistry and rampant divorce, a couple of cowboys staying together, setting mondo sales records and kicking chaps should be celebrated. (

2MAXWELL AND JILL SCOTT (St. Pete Times Forum, June 15): Each ticket for this one should come with breath mints, a hotel key, a bearskin rug — and an alibi. Hubba-hubba, is this a hot show or what? Maxwell, touring behind BLACKsummers'night, and Jill Scott, touring behind Light of the Sun, are exceptionally coiffed neosoul singers who derive vibe and poetry from all points pelvic. What's the record for the world's largest game of spin the bottle? 'Cause, Tampa Bay, we are sooo breaking it, baby. (

350 CENT (Jannus Live, June 16): Mainstream rap isn't a thug's game any more, so that leaves the oft-bulleted Curtis Jackson out of fashion. Fiddy still has fans, and this is still a major get for the fledgling Jannus Live. But truth be told, the MC hasn't been the hottest dude In Da Club for years. His upcoming Black Magic album is supposedly techno-based. Not sure if that's a good idea, but seeing 50 Cent bop around in a giant Dr. Seuss hat could be worth the $42.50 alone. (

4SILVERSUN PICKUPS (The Ritz Ybor, June 18): I just took a tour of the revitalized Ritz Ybor and, man, is that a sweet joint. In fact, between the Ritz and Jannus Live, we should start luring hot midlevel bands away from the Hard Rock and House of Blues in Orlando. With its distorted guitars, unreliable narration and true grit, L.A.'s Pickups have been compared to the Pixies. Go check 'em out — and check out the Ritz's bathrooms, too. They're really proud of those. (

5EARTH, WIND & FIRE (Ruth Eckerd Hall, June 29): Why EWF? Because my mother, Mary "the Diplomat" Daly, is in town, and she loves them. Plus, Mom complains I never write about anything she likes. She also complains that I should have been a salesman. My cousins are salesmen and they just bought her sister, a.k.a. Aunt Shirley, a new car. I, on the other hand, bought my Mom white chocolate for Mother's Day, which she says she's allergic to. But that's a lie. I bought her petits fours with white frosting. There's a difference. Then Mom cries and says I'm mean to her. And by then it's time for her to fly back home to Baltimore and for me to take my special $10-a-pill "mommy medicine." Stupid Earth, Wind & Fire. You better play September, that's all I'm saying. (
