In June, Jeff Tyzik was named principal pops conductor of the Florida Orchestra, the first person to hold that position since Richard Kaufman stepped down in 2009. This weekend, Tyzik is making his first appearance of the season, leading the orchestra in a program of movie music that includes selections from Casablanca, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Star Wars, The Entertainer and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Tyzik has six pops music directorships. The latest orchestra to name him to that post was the Detroit Symphony this month. In October he was announced as the Seattle Symphony's principal pops conductor. He was already pops conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic, Oregon Symphony and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
The orchestra and Tyzik play at 8 p.m. Friday at Ferguson Hall of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa; 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater. $15-$45. (727) 892-3337 or toll-free 1-800-662-7286.
