With Jannus Landing in temporary mishegas and the Ritz Ybor stealing buzz as the hip new club in Tampa Bay, music fans are feeling a little dinged up in downtown St. Pete.
What we need is a big act, a bold-faced name, a superman to save our fair scene.
What we need is … David Cook? Hey, we'll take him!
The Season 7 American Idol champ, and reportedly good egg, will play the Mahaffey Theater on Nov. 27. Tickets go on sale Oct. 24 at noon. Go to mahaffeytheater.com for more information.
Cook is a sweet get for the lush, lovely and oft-overlooked Mahaffey, which needed serious help filling out a fall-winter pop lineup that included Jeffrey Osborne ("On the wings of looooove … ") and Gordon Lightfoot ("Sundowwwn … "). Look for Cook to stuff the venerable hall.
But wait, there's more hot St. Pete action! Owl City, a one-man indie-popper who's killing on iTunes, will bring his hit Fireflies to the State Theatre on Feb. 3. That's another show that will sell out fast. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at ticketmaster.com.
And lest Tampa not feel sated with such mondo acts as Kiss (Oct. 21) and Miley Cyrus (Dec. 1), both coming to the St. Pete Times Forum, that venue is also getting another out-of-this-world gig:
On Nov. 1, "Star Wars: In Concert" will combine an 86-piece symphony, a three-story hi-def video screen and Anthony Daniels (the dude who played C-3PO!) for a multimedia explosion of music and nerds. Tickets are available now at ticketmaster.com. Go to www.starwarsinconcert.com for a totally dorktastic preview!
