Josh Kelley thinks he and Ryan Cabrera will make one dynamic duo.
"We wrote a song together called Tell It Like It Is, and it's the Tell It Like It Is tour," Kelley said. "It's going to be like a Simon and Garfunkel thing, and nobody's done that in a long time. We're going to take our seven best songs each and our new song and maybe a cover, and we're going to play on each other's stuff, sing on each other's songs, and it's going to be great." The two-headliner tour, which makes its second stop April 16 in Ybor City, is rare in the oft-egomaniacal music biz.
But Kelley, 29, has had his share of solo success. Since 2003, the pop-rocker has cranked out five albums, including last year's Special Company, which went platinum on Kelley's own DNK Records. His personal life is also at the top of the charts. In 2007, the Augusta, Ga., native wed Grey's Anatomy actor Katherine Heigl, whom he'd met when she appeared in his video Only You. Heigl's Grey's character, Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, is currently battling cancer on the show.
Kelley called tbt* from his adopted hometown of Los Angeles, where he'd just finished a songwriting session.
I read in People magazine that you wanted to get a tattoo on this tour. Have you done that yet?
No, I'm not on tour yet. But I had the conversation with my girl the other day, and she was like, "Oh, really?" (laughs) She said, "I hope it's cool."
What do you want to get?
I don't know. That's why I'm nervous. I have no idea.
Ybor City has five or six tattoo shops. So if you were inclined to get the tattoo, Tampa would be a really good place to do that.
Oh, my God. I can already tell there's going to be so much peer pressure involved in this situation.
Another thing Florida is famous for is golf courses. You're the No. 15 musician-golfer in the world (according to Golf Digest).
Yeah. I actually think I should be higher than that. (laughs) But I'm actually one of the golfers who doesn't lie about his handicap. (Kelley's handicap is 6, the article says.)
Will you have time to squeeze in a round when you're down here?
I'm bringing my golf clubs. Are you kidding me?
Do you know what happens to Izzie on Grey's Anatomy?
I have no idea. Honestly, I don't even think she knows. Nobody knows, 'cause it's up the writers.
Which of your songs would fit into the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack?
I have a song that's called Cain and Able that's on an album called Just Say the Word. It came out in 2006. Listen to Cain and Able. That's a great song that would be great on that TV show.
