Meet Florida Orchestra member Brandon McLean, double bass

Position: assistant principal double bass

With the orchestra since: just this October

I'm originally from: Seattle

Age I started studying my instrument: 12 or 13

My favorite piece to play on my instrument: Beethoven's 9th or Mahler's 2nd

My iPod's usually playing: An awful lot of Bach and Beethoven. Aside from that, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, Sinatra and Radiohead for starters.

I'm an expert at: I know a little bit about a lot of things, but I'm an expert at almost nothing.

But I'm really lousy at: hitting a golf ball the same way twice

Career path if I hadn't chosen music: I have a family of dentists, and may have gone that route.

The question I'm asked most often about my instrument: Whenever I take my instrument to the airport, it's gigantic in a 7-foot, hard-sided fiberglass case, and everyone seems to think they are the first person to ask me if I wished I played the piccolo. I ask them if they've ever heard a piccolo (no offense). But once in England the taxi driver asked me, "Is that one of them fancy new cellphones?" and I laughed for days.
