February in Florida has big benefits, no doubt. Just go outside. And what better way to end one of these glorious days than with a sunset serenade on the beach?
That's the idea that's behind the free Music on the Beach concert series that kicks off its 13th season on Thursday with some classic rock at Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs. A different concert is slated for one Thursday each month.
Presented by Friends of Music on the Beach, the Tarpon Springs Recreation Department and sponsored by Sun Toyota in New Port Richey, this year's series offers a little something for everyone, said Len Gravitz, a Friends board member and one of the event's original founders.
The classic rock band Time Bandits will get things off to a rousing start from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, along with a beach bonfire and an area set aside for roasting marshmallows. Evergreen, a newcomer to this venue, will perform a selection of Irish tunes in March. This season's lineup also includes the Tarpon Springs High Jazz Band and longtime crowd favorite, De Lei'd Parrots, dishing up a little Cheeseburger in Paradise, of course.
Typically, as many as 1,000 people attend each concert, Gravitz said, noting that parking is not a problem with a free shuttle service starting at 6:15 p.m. from the parking lot at Tarpon Springs High School.
Those who come are encouraged to bring along a picnic dinner (no alcohol) or purchase a hot dog from one of a few food vendors that are on-site. Covered shelters are available on a first come, first served basis, but folks are also welcome to lay out a blanket (no tents) or set up their own lawn chairs and portable tables in the sand.
Then just sit back and relax.
