Get ready, Rays fans, 'cause here comes the BOOM! Hip-hop artist Nelly (come on, you remember him) will perform a postgame gig at Tropicana Field Saturday after the home team takes on the Seattle Mariners.
Best known for hits Hot in Herre, Grillz and Air Force Ones, Nelly (a.k.a. Cornell Haynes) will also be busting out songs from upcoming album Nelly 5.0, due this spring and featuring such pals as T.I. and Dilemma duet partner Kelly Rowland. Nelly said the album is "incredible" and "people will love it," calling it "mellow but energetic". (Mellow? I guess no more dropping down and getting his eagle on now that he's rounding 36, huh?)
In anticipation of his arrival, Nelly talked about rocking the Trop, (kind of) rooting for the Rays and a possible guest appearance at Durty Nelly's. Just don't step on his J's if you catch him there after the show. Batter up!
Nelly, if you were a pro ballplayer, what would be your at-bat song?
Hmmm, me personally? I always try to pick songs for other people, never for myself. Possibly #1 because I've always wanted to be No. 1, or Here Comes the Boom.
Since you're from "the Lou" (psst: St. Louis, people, try to keep up), do you feel like you're cheating on the Cardinals by playing for the Rays ?
[Laughs] Nahhh, nahhh, they already gave me a thumbs up. Everybody knows I'm a Cardinals fan … I love everything about baseball. I love to see hometown pride … unless we are playing you guys. I actually rooted for you when you were playing in the World Series.
Will you be playing new stuff from Nelly 5.0 at the Trop?
I think so. We might slide in one or two or three joints that will be on the album.
We were digging you in The Longest Yard. Anything new for your acting career? Any movies in the can?
A few projects. I don't want to let too much out. I didn't want to rush the movie thing. I understand acting is very serious, I wanted to take my time. I didn't want to disrespect the actors. I want something I'm comfortable with as I'm making the transition. I'm still doing CSI: New York and there are a few more episodes coming out soon.
