Playlist: Great songs to mate with a special date

August 8, 2008.

Trip 8s.

Snowman City.

Today's date isn't as nefarious as the number of the beast (666).

Nor is it as potentially lucky as the slot machine special (777).

But there's definitely a tingly vibe to this octocentric Friday.

888. So palindromically perfect for the summer. After all, in baseball terms, that's Ripken, Berra and Yaz standing shoulder to shoulder to shouder. That I'd like to see.

888. So robust, so Rubenesque. This is a seriously sexy day.

$8.88. That's what a room will cost you today at a Super 8. That'll come in handy for all those newlyweds, I bet.

888. Toll-free, baby.

The number 8 is especially significant in pop music. Today just happens to be the birthday of U2's Edge, Poison's Rikki Rockett, rap's Kool Moe Dee and country star Mel Tillis.

More than that, what many consider the very first "rock 'n' roll" song has not one, but two 8s in its title. So it's only fitting that we kick off today's special playlist with that swingin' Ike Turner classic. "Let me introduce you to my Rocket '88 …"

Turn it up, gang, and go get lucky!
