Sean Daly picks the best July concerts in Tampa Bay

Ringo Starr bothers me. Yeah, yeah, he's a Beatle. And sure, Photograph gets me every time. But his incessantly regurged "peace and love" shtick makes me want to get a Sun Tzu tattoo. Plus no matter how many cool dudes Ringo has in his All-Starr Band — Gary Wright, Edgar Winter, Mr. Mister's Richard Page, all coming to Ruth Eckerd on July 13 — ol' Richard Starkey still dominates the mike. So in good conscience, I cannot recommend Ringo's gig as one of my Top 5 July concerts in Tampa Bay. And seeing as how I'm angering large swaths of people today: I fully intend on weaseling out of Dave Matthews' July 28 Tampa show, too. I'll just tell my editor I'm deathly allergic to bare feet and PETA. Herewith, a few July shows I will be attending...

Sean Daly's Top 5 July concerts

1 STING AND THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC CONCERT ORCHESTRA (1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre, Saturday): Despite the fact that my monthly concert picks are a kindly service for our beloved readers, I get more hate mail for this series than anything else I write. Certain Bon Jovi fans are still surly over an innocent crack made months ago. (Where's the love, Jersey girls? Can't we kiss and make up? Or at least brush each other's mullets? Kidding!) For that reason alone, I don't dare dis Sting, the tantric titan, beloved by ladies the world over. Besides, this show sounds cool: Sting doing Police and solo hits whilst backed by a full orchestra. Gordon Sumner may not be the raging hunk JBJ is, but when he pulls out his lute, prepare to swoon. (

2 SCORPIONS and RATT (1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre, July 17): Many people lead lives of dedication and action, engaged in the socio-political crises of the world and what we can do to make things better for future generations. They are poets, philosophers, young handsome journalists intent on investigation and change. I, on the other hand, spent most of today trying to find a really cool Ratt T-shirt online. (

3 VANS WARPED TOUR (Vinoy Park, July 23): The longest-running summer tour in America still provides mighty bang for your buck: This year, you get more than 30 punk, pop and rock bands for just $34.76. Hey Monday, We the Kings, AM Taxi — the lineup is loaded. The only drawback is that this popular all-day event is on July 23, guaranteeing I'll spend half my time listening to bands and the other half counting the number of overpierced 14-year-olds passed out from heatstroke. Remember, boys and girls: Hydration is for winners! (

4 ROBERT PLANT (Ruth Eckerd Hall, July 30): I'm pretty pumped for this one, although I'd be more stoked if Plant were again touring with Alison Krauss. Their Grammy-winning duets project, 2007's Raising Sand, is the sexiest, most rewarding album of the 21st century. If I get a chance to interview Plant, I fully intend to ask him about that tangible May-December intimacy with Krauss. Seriously, I dare anyone to find a steamier record from any time — and no, Bon Jovi faithful, Slippery When Wet is not even close. (

5 RIHANNA and KE$HA (1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre, July 30): My neighbor Gulshan really wants to see the Ri-Ri and Ke-Ke show, but no one in the 'hood will take her — including, curiously enough, her husband, who has been known to dance to J.Lo in public. Being the music dude and all, I kind of feel like maybe I should go with her. Then again, there's going to be a lot of dancing in the stands, and what if, say, our heinies touch during an awkward shimmy to Umbrella and then our eyes meet? I'd never be able to leave my house again! Tell me, Gulshan: How do you feel about Ratt? (
