Singer won't let MS diagnosis derail projects

Punk legend and former St. Petersburg resident Exene Cervenka, singer for the band X, has announced on her Web site that she is suffering from multiple sclerosis.

"Although this is obviously unfortunate news, I am choosing to see the positive in it," Cervenka said in a statement. "While this diagnosis will most certainly mean some changes for me, personally, it will not affect my commitments to the current X U.S. tour, nor will it affect my solo album that is slated for release this fall on Bloodshot Records."

Cervenka moved with her family to St. Petersburg as a youngster, then dropped out of St. Petersburg High School on her 16th birthday in 1972. She headed west a few years later and helped found X, which was among the most influential bands in the early days of hard-core punk.
