SoundCheck: Keith Urban, John Lee Hooker Jr., Def Leppard, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Nelly

Keith Urban

With Jake Owen

Details: Saturday 7:30 p.m. St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $27.50-$75. (813) 301-2500.

Keith Urban: Too Hollywood for Nashville? Or too Nashville for Hollywood? Both cities are a long way from Whangarei, New Zealand, the remote hometown of the shaggy-haired, stubble-chinned singer. Since moving to the States, Urban has become one of the biggest names in country music, thanks to a series of hit singles powered by mandolin, pulsing percussion and Urban's own explosive guitar playing. Days Go By, Somebody Like You and Who Wouldn't Want To Be Me are classic road songs, and on Long Hot Summer, from 2010's Get Closer, he even channels a little Bryan Adams. Add it up, and it was enough to score an Oscar-winning Aussie mate, Nicole Kidman. You're right, Keith — who wouldn't want to be you?

John Lee Hooker Jr.

With Beth McKee

Details: Sunday 5 p.m. Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $10-$13. (813) 971-0666.

It's a bold man who elects to follow in his father's footsteps, especially when his father is a legend at his craft. But for John Lee Hooker Jr., the blues are simply ingrained in his DNA. He's proved worthy of accolades from around the blues world, including a Grammy nomination for his 2004 album Blues With a Vengeance. His style is his own, a little more modern, but you can feel the passion in his fingers when he covers his daddy's hit Boom Boom.

Def Leppard

With Heart

Details: Friday 7:30 p.m. 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $25-$125. (813) 740-2446.

Are you gettin' it? Because Def Leppard is still gettin' it after all these years. They're also still pouring sugar, getting rocked and f-f-f-foolin' crowds into making them feel like it's 1983 all over again. Despite a bio sordid enough to fill a whole season of Behind the Music, the British hair metal legends have outlasted many of their peers, thanks to those Brontosaurus-sized hooks. Meanwhile, openers Heart have songs that will resonate with music lovers of all ages, having charted singles in the '70s, '80s, '90s and even in 2010, with comeback singles WTF and Hey You. But how can you not love the smash choruses of Crazy On You, What About Love and — heck, we'll admit it — Will You Be There (In The Morning)?

Blood, Sweat and Tears

Details: Saturday 7 p.m. The Club at Treasure Island, 400 Treasure Island Causeway, Treasure Island. $60. (727) 367-4511.

Attention readers: Raise your hands if you've ever been a member of Blood, Sweat and Tears. Yep, we thought there would be a few of you out there. BS&T's website names more than 40 past and present members in this famed jazz-fusion megagroup; Wikipedia puts the figure at 134. All we know is, the Woodstock veterans keep rolling on, thanks to hits like Spinning Wheel and You've Made Me So Very Happy, no matter who's in the band. And who knows — ask nicely, and maybe they'll let you sit in, too.

Nelly

With the St. Lunatics, Acafool

Details: Friday 6 p.m. Shephard's Beach Resort, 619 S Gulfview Blvd., Clearwater Beach. $32.50 and up. (727) 442-5107.

Shephard's Beach Resort has always been known to attract a hot name or two for Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day parties. But rarely does it bring in a show this big just for the heck of it. Nelly and the St. Lunatics will perform at Shephard's on Friday, bringing with them an array of hits, including Country Grammar, Ride Wit Me and Hot In Herre. Get out of your friend's basement — even if it does have a pole in it — and head out to watch Nelly at the beach.
